If you have never watched a sunset from the Gulf Coast of Florida you have not yet seen what a sunset can truly be. The single greatest piece of advice I can give you about Venice — the one thing that will transform your experience of this extraordinary city from wonderful to completely unforgettable — is this. Wake up early. Earlier than you think you need to. Set your alarm for five thirty in the morning, pull on your shoes, and walk out into a Venice that most visitors never see. The canals still and silver in the early light. The calle empty and echoing with your footsteps. The sun rising over the lagoon and turning the whole city to gold one ancient facade at a time. The vegetable boats making their morning deliveries along the back canals. The smell of fresh bread from a bakery not yet open to the public.
